Democracy Now! is an independent, non-profit news organization based in New York City, producing a weekday global news hour hosted by award-winning journalists Amy Goodman, Juan González and Nermeen Shaikh. Our program is distributed worldwide to an audience of millions and features breaking news headlines and in-depth interview segments. Our news summaries and select interview segments are available in Spanish. We produce high-quality, independent public-interest journalism that is free from commercial and government influence.
Overview
The Director of Audience leads audience growth and engagement across our digital and broadcast platforms. This senior leader oversees our digital and Spanish teams and works closely with editorial and fundraising staff to expand our reach, deepen engagement, and drive audience revenue. The ideal candidate brings proven expertise in audience development, newsletter and campaign management, data analysis, and a strong command of video platforms. This position reports to the Executive Director.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute innovative strategies to grow audience and engagement across broadcast and digital platforms for English and Spanish-language news.
- Set ambitious, measurable goals for audience growth and engagement, monitor performance and report results to senior leadership.
- Leverage analytics and audience feedback to continually refine growth and engagement strategies.
- Design and implement audience listening initiatives and share insights and best practices across teams.
- Lead experimentation with emerging tools, platforms, and publishing strategies to expand reach and foster engagement.
- Partner with fundraising to develop, test and optimize audience revenue strategies across products and platforms.
- Oversee the planning and execution of digital marketing campaigns, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Ensure digital publishing practices are optimized for news discovery.
- Manage editorial and visual consistency across platforms.
- Build and nurture relationships with platforms and publishing partners.
- Stay abreast of trends in news consumption, audience development, and digital marketing to inform strategy.
- Cultivate a team culture of excellence, innovation and collaboration.
- Provide effective supervision, mentorship and career development for team staff and manage department contractors.

Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience growing and engaging audience for news with 3 years in a leadership role.
- Exceptional news judgment and deep knowledge of Democracy Now!’s journalism.
- Demonstrated success in developing and executing multi-channel audience growth and engagement campaigns.
- Track record experimenting with new formats and engagement strategies.
- Advanced skills in analytics, metrics tracking, and communicating insights.
- Proficiency with digital publishing tools for web, email and social media platforms.
- Experience managing digital marketing strategy and budgets.
- Background in audience listening including social platforms, user surveys and focus groups.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced news environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain visual, brand and voice consistency across diverse daily publishing platforms.
- Empathic cross-functional team leader committed to mentorship and professional growth.
Preferred
- Proven success driving growth on video platforms.
- Experience driving newsletter strategy.
- Familiarity with audience revenue strategies for news organizations.
- Track record of growing audience for multi-lingual news.
- Working proficiency in Spanish.
Compensation
- The salary range is $120,000 - $140,000.
